The international daylily organization is called The American Hemerocallis Society or AHS for short.  Each year, daylily growers gather in a national convention. this year the convention is in Houston, Texas.  Our Club will provide a van to take people from Southeast Texas to the convention in Houston.  Each member will make their own reservations with the hotel and the convention.

Meet daylily enthusiasts and hybridizers from around the world.  Tour many Houston area daylily gardens. 

Receive training at garden and flower judging.

Check with our Club President, Deane Spradley or at the Club Meeting for details of van pick up locations.

Shangri La has it's grand re-opening in the Spring of 2008.  We'll tour these historic gardens in Orange, Texas and then go to Vidor to tour The Hoyal's Gardens.  Bring a sack lunch and folding chairs for lunch at The Hoyals.

Everyone is welcome.  Dutch-treat meal at the Red Onion.  Meet in back room.

 

This is a great day to learn how to judge daylilies in the garden.  Better understand the best daylily plant qualities and flower qualities and what makes an outstanding, award winning daylily.

 

Even the novice daylily grower will learn something useful.  Plus the fellowship is always fun.

by Holly Hanson, of Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange.

Holly coordinates Shangri La's volunteer program, which includes recruiting, interviewing, and placement of volunteers as well as orientation, training, management of volunteers and program evaluation. Holly also schedules all public and school tours into all areas of Shangri La. Holly has been with the Shangri La program since August 2004, starting as greenhouse manager before moving to the volunteer/tour coordinator position in October 2007.  

Holly received a Bachelor of Science degree in plant science from Louisiana Tech University with a minor in English. She previously worked at Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas, first with the horticulture staff in the Rain Forest Pyramid and, later, with the horticulture therapy department, where she coordinated a summer camp for children and adults called "Camp Discover Nature.
