  MAY 28, 2008 (Wednesday)-- Tour of Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, Texas and Hoyal's Garden in Vidor, Texas

 

A group of Gulf Coast Daylily members and others toured Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, 16th Street and Park Avenue

Shangri La has it's grand re-opening in the Spring of 2008.  We'll tour these historic gardens in Orange, Texas and then went to Vidor to tour The Hoyal's Gardens and enjoy lunch

Many club members worked together, as usual, to prepare for the big Spring Plant Sale.

  MAY 7, 2008 (Wednesday) -- Tour of Beaumont Gardens  9:00 a.m. - until

 

About two dozen club members and friends enjoyed a cool (temperatures in the 70s), cloudy morning making their way through three member gardens -- The Broussards, The Merriams, and The Faggards.  We enjoyed the roses and daylilies and cannas.  We enjoyed good food at each home and a sack lunch afterwards at the Garden Center at Tyrell Park.

 


  APRIL 19, 2008 (Saturday) -- Workday at Tyrrell Park Club Daylily Beds
About a dozen of us showed up in our garden work clothes and pulled weeds, trimmed plants, divided old clumps, and planted a new bed of daylilies at Beaumont Botanical Gardens.  Thanks everyone.

 


  APRIL 12, 2008 (Saturday) -- MEETING AND CLUB AUCTION, 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Nicole gave a delightful program, including a beautiful PowerPoint presentation with many of her current collection of daylilies and some of her seedlings.  She told about how her parents and some of the great Florida hybridizers have influence her in her love of raising daylilies.  She shared very helpful information on her fertilization, pest treatments, watering, and general approach to growing and hybridizing.  Well done, Nicole!

 

More than 40 members and guests enjoyed the meeting.

 

She also brought several of her cultivars for sale at the Auction.  Thanks!

CLUB AUCTION.

Club members bid on and bought on a number of excellent clumps of daylilies, raising hundreds of dollars for the club.

Several decisions were made by the club, including:  to cancel the 2008 Daylily Show, maintaining the Club Daylily Sale in May, though. 

 


 

  APRIL 5, 2008 (Saturday)  -- PLANT SALE AT HERB FEST, 8:00 a.m. - until

We joined several other clubs -- herbs, african violets, orchids, and more.  Hundreds of people came through to buy plants.  We sold out again, netting about $1,500 for the work of the club.  Thanks to all who worked at Herb Fest.

 

 


  APRIL 4, 2008 (Friday) --  Plant Sale Work Day, 9:00 a.m. - until

 

About 15 of our club members washed, cleaned and labeled the plants form Dan Hansen for the Herb Fest sale the next day.  Thanks for the coffee and donuts sandwiches and chips.  Great fellowship.  Good owrk.

 


 

  MARCH 1, 2008 (Saturday) -- Social / 6th Annual Spring Fling, 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

 

A large group of club members met at First United Methodist in Groves, Texas.  The covered dish meal was delicious as usual.  We made the decision to rent vans to go to the AHS Convention, instead of the bus as previously announced.  We also decided to donate $200 for the plant auction plants for the Convention.  Many members are looking forward to being in Houston in May.

 

Harland Merriam gave a program on his methods of hybridizing.  He said having a "GOAL" is very important.  Some club members are hybridizing for small doubles, others for spiders.  Harland's goal is polytepals that are rust resistant and do well here in the South.  Click on this link for a page on Harland's techniques and his potting soil recipe.  Here are some of the parents for Harland's work...

After the program, the members enjoyed an "auction" with play money.  Each member had brought a wrapped gift -- garden signs, nic-nacs, plants, gag gifts, whatever.  Members enjoy bidding and winning auction items.  The real club auction, with real money, is in April


  FEBRUARY 2, 2008 (Saturday)

Over forty members gathered at Sanderson's Restaurant for a very helpful program, updates on plans for 2008, good fellowship and delicious food.

 

Jimmy Terrio and Tim Tassin, two Louisiana hybridizers showed pictures of their seedlings (to many oooos and aaaaahs) and talked about their approach to hybridizing.

  DECEMBER 1, 2007 (Saturday) -- CHRISTMAS PARTY (Covered Dish)

The new 2008 Officers were installed for the New Year.  The club made the decision to charter a bus to take members to the annual meeting of AHS in Houston in May 2008.

Many beautiful plants from Chris Bell were given to club members as were other door prizes.  Two memberships in AHS were given to members as were two registration for the 2008 AHS Convention.


  NOVEMBER 3 (Saturday) -- GENERAL MEETING

A great Covered Dish lunch and good fellowship, election of new officers for 2008, and more.

Many new members and visitors.  Decisions about a bus chartered to take members to the National Convention of AHS in May in Houston, Texas.  Decisions about purchasing door-prizes for December party for all in attendance.

  OCTOBER 20, 2007 (Saturday) -- DAYLILY FLOWER PLANT SALE

Time:  9:00 a.m. - until

Program:  Our annual Fall Daylily.  Plant Sale.  Come learn about growing daylilies.  Come buy daylily plants.  Some plants are more common varieties at low prices.  Others are the latest hybrids from nationally known growers.

We always enjoy seeing each other after a couple of months of being away.


  JUNE 2, 2007 (Saturday) -- BUS TRIP TO "THE LILY FARM," THE GARDEN OF JACK CARPENTER

We filled a 50 passenger bus and made a day trip to Jack Carpenter's "Lily Farm" in Center, Texas.  Everyone had a great time and purchased many plants.

The sale and show were done well by so many volunteers -- those purchasing and preparing the flowers for sale, those who brought flowers to be judged, the show and sale leadership, judges, and more.  Thanks to everyone who made the day so enjoyable.

   MAY 16, 2007 (Wednesday) -- TOUR OF BEAUMONT DAYLILY GARDENS

          MAY 9, 2007 (Wednesday) -- TOUR OF VIDOR DAYLILY GARDENS

Brief Report:  A caravan of a dozen cars and thirty or so daylily enthusiasts toured three gardens each week:  The Browns, The Housemans, and The Hoyles in Vidor on May 9th and The Faggards, The Merriams, and The Broussards in Beaumont on May 16th. .  We saw thousands of daylilies in bloom, many beautiful seedlings and many more varieties of other plants in the gardens.  We enjoyed a nice lunch and a demonstration of how to show a daylily at the upcoming Daylily Show.


   APRIL 14 (Saturday)-- MEETING AND PLANT AUCTION

Brief Report:  About 50 members and friends gathered for a delicious lunch, some business, and an exiting auction.  Every single auctioned plant from Petit and from Carpenter sold, netting the club almost $1,000.  Club members reviewed upcoming plans for the Plant Show and Sale, the trip to Carpenter's Daylily Farm in June, and the two sets of Garden Tours.


  MARCH 31, 2007 (Saturday) -- PLANT SALE @ HERB FEST

Brief Report:  Herb Fest brings together many of the local societies (bromeliads, orchids, african violets, herbs, local plants and more) into one place along with book sellers and garden supply people.  Our Gulf Coast Daylily Society sold hundreds of bare root and container daylilies.  In fact, we SOLD OUT.  We were able to meet many people who grow daylilies in our area and helped others learn about daylily growing.


  MARCH 29, 2007 (Thursday) -- PLANT SALE WORKDAY
Brief Report:  Many members worked together to clean and sort daylilies for the upcoming HerbFest.  We enjoyed good fellowship, a delicious lunch, and tours and conversations throughout The Brown's gardens.

   MARCH 3, 2007 (Saturday) -- SPRING FLING and COVERED DISH LUNCH

BRIEF REPORT OF MEETING:  We filled over seven tables for a delicious covered-dish lunch, with plenty of barbeque beef and an abundance of desserts.  We approved a change in the by-laws to require all elected officers to be members of the American Hemerocallis Society. 

After lunch and a brief business meeting, the members enjoyed playing BINGO for prizes.  Most everyone left with daylilies or other plants or beautiful gardening items.

Four new members joined the club.


   FEBRUARY 3, 2007 (Saturday) -- MEETING and DUTCH TREAT LUNCH

Mr. Micah Meyer, Agricultural Extension Office, Beaumont

This was the kickoff meeting for 2007, with Deane Spradley as President.  More than 8 tables of members, some from a two-hour drive away were present.  Many new members were introduced. 

Mr. Meyer's program was on Earthkind (TM) Roses, which means rose varieties that require little or no care, little or no watering, no pesticides and only organic fertilizers.  This Earthkind appraoch has been developed by Texas A&M.  Many club members grow some of these varieties.  More more information see earthkind.tamu.edu

The meal at Red Onion was delicious and warm fellowship and friendships were shared at the tables.  Prayers and support were offered to members in need.

Several items of business were handled by the club. 

  • The bus trip to The Lily Farm, June 2nd, was firmed up and more than 50 signed. 
  • Many door prizes were won by members.
  • Several new members joined the club.
  • Plans for the Plant Show and judging in May were made.
  • Member meeting packets and the 2007 Yearbooks were distributed.
  • This new website was introduced.
  • The workday location was changed to Lanny and Margie Brown's home in Vidor
  • All the normal club business was completed.
